In collaboration with illustrator and designer ricoberger.com, we want to tribute the LGBT + activist Marsha P. Johnson. Marsha P. Johnson (1945 – 1992) was an Icon, Transgender Activist, a pioneer of the Gay Liberation Movement, and a staple of Queer West Village life for three decades. In 1969, at the age of 23, she started what is now called The Stonewall Riots after being targeted in a police raid at The Stonewall Inn. She threw the first brick or shot glass, or high heel – whatever it was, she threw it.

In 1970, along with Transgender Activist Sylvia Rivera, she co-founded Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) and advocated for Trans communities, Sex Workers, and Homeless Queer Communities for most of her life. In the 1980’s she advocated for HIV patients. She was found dead in 1992 and her death was ruled a suicide, despite the mysterious circumstances. There was no real police investigation.“ Text by @queeremporium
